Young Driver Insurance Could Cost You A Fortune

Shopping for car insurance is an unwanted chore that many people detest doing. This is even more of hated task for young drivers, as many of their insurance premiums can be quite high. Finding affordable young driver car insurance is not impossible though, and many sites offer comparison rates for the young driver to find the most affordable rate for them. There are discounts and reductions that can be applied insurance premiums that will make the insurance much more affordable to young drivers. Other ways to get lower insurance include having a higher deductible and only driving the vehicle necessary places, like work and school.

Two types of discounts that can be applied to young driver insurance are a good student discount and taking a driver education class. Getting a grade point average of 3.0 or above is usually required for this discount, and is applicable for both high school and college students. Taking a driver education class can not only teach young drivers defensive driving skills, but it will also cause a significant reduction in their insurance premium per month. The driver safety class has a hands-on component and a classroom safety component. Both components provide young drivers with skills that make them better drivers.

Another way that young driver car insurance can be more affordable is by having the young driver choose higher deductibles. The lowest deductibles mean higher premium rates. If a young driver is comfortable with driving, has an older car and feels safe with a higher deductible this is a simple way to save money on car insurance. While it sounds nice to have a low deductible, it may be wise to have a higher deductible until the driver turns 24 or 25 years of age, at which insurance companies often drop the price of insurance premiums anyway.

Sometimes young driver car insurance is cheaper if the driver agrees to only drive the car to work and school. If a car is only used for necessities and for a couple of hours daily, it is quite easy for insurance companies to grant reductions on premiums. Young drivers have been shown to  to get in more accidents if they are driving around friends at night and on weekends, then if just driven to school or work. Insurance under writers will give discounts to those that are only using their car to go to necessary places, as this is viewed as a rather safe practice, even for young drivers.
