Many drivers under the age of 25 often have higher insurance rates, due to statistically being at a higher risk for accidents and tickets. Since most students are under the age of 25 years old, they often fall into this higher risk category. Although, they fall into a high risk category, there are many student discounts available to make lower insurance premiums for students. These include being covered under your parents’ policy, having good grades and taking a driver’s education class.
One way for a student to get a lower rate is for them to be covered under their parents policy. Many insurance companies allow a student to stay on their parents policy as a secondary driver as long as they continue to be a full-time student attending a local high school, college or university. It may be cheaper to stay on their policy and pay your parents back, then to pay a whole policy by yourself.
A student discount will be given if the student can maintain a grade point average of B or above, and/or make the honor roll or deans list. This is applicable to both high school and college students, as long as attendance is full time for the student. If a student’s grades drop below a 3.0 grade point average, this student discount will be dropped from the policy.
Taking a driver’s education class will lower student car insurance as well. These classes provide both a hands on component and a classroom competent for its’ students. Defensive driving and safety techniques are taught, and the students receive a certificate that they have passed the course. The certificate can then be given to the insurance company for a discount. This class is offered by many public school districts, community colleges and some retail stores. Most insurance companies can provide the student with a list of driver’s education courses available in their area.
